What is EMDR therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a structured therapy where you briefly focus on a distressing memory while also using bilateral stimulation (like guided eye movements or tapping). Over time, this can reduce how vivid and emotionally “stuck” the memory feels, so it stops hijacking the present.

Who it’s for

EMDR can help with:

  • Trauma and PTSD symptoms (including “single-incident” trauma).

  • Anxiety, panic, and phobias tied to distressing experiences.

  • Grief and loss that feels stuck or overwhelming.

  • Disturbing memories, triggers, nightmares, or body-based reactions.

  • Chronic stress responses (fight/flight/freeze) that don’t seem to turn off.

You don’t need to share every detail of what happened for EMDR to be effective—treatment can move at a pace that feels safe.

How EMDR works

EMDR uses a structured process to help the brain reprocess unprocessed or “stuck” memories so they feel more like something that happened in the past, not something happening right now. EMDR is organized into eight phases that build safety first, then move into reprocessing and integration over time.

What to expect

  • Ask questions, share goals, and confirm fit—no pressure.

  • Build coping tools and map targets so you feel steady and supported.

  • Use bilateral stimulation in a structured way to reduce distress and strengthen healthier beliefs

Many people begin noticing change in how they feel about specific memories as treatment progresses, though timelines vary by person and history.

Work with a trained clinician

EMDR is a mental health treatment and should be provided by a properly trained, licensed clinician. EMDRIA does not support “do-it-yourself” EMDR used as a substitute for professional therapy.
